Planning Your Goals – How to Get Closer to Achieving Your Dreams

Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?

Everybody from time to time thinks about their goals, dreams, ambitions, and ideas of what they’d like their future to look like. Making them a reality, however, is usually much harder to do.

Our goals, especially the big ones, can often feel out of reach or difficult to achieve. This may demotivate us from working towards them – but there are simple steps you can take to inch yourself closer to achieving what you want to.

I’m going to line out four simple things you can start doing today, so you can begin turning your dreams into something visible and tangible. Whether those dreams are seemingly far-fetched and overly ambitious, or small and within arm’s reach, these tips will help you get there faster.

1. Write Them Down

Whether your goals are a list of chores you need to complete by the end of the day or a massive five-year career plan, writing them down turns them into something concrete.

Writing down your goals has been shown to reduce stress, boost motivation, and improve focus. In fact, one study found that people who write their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. So, get that pen out and start putting words to paper!

2. Create a Dream board

Dream boards, or vision boards, are collages of images related to your ambitions and goals. Imagine if your goal was to be living on a tropical island in five years – your dream board might be a collection of pictures of sandy beaches, crystal blue oceans, beachside huts, and the like.

Dream boards allow you to visualize your ideas and give you a nudge in the right direction. Try hanging it up in a place you see regularly so that you’re constantly reminded of what you want to achieve.

3. Tell People Your Goals

It might seem daunting to tell people what your goals are, especially if they’re big goals that you might not reach. You don’t want to end up feeling embarrassed.

Don’t let fear of judgment hinder your journey towards succeeding though – make that fear your friend! We are social creatures, and when we tell friends and family about our plans, they’re more likely to hold us accountable. If someone knows your goal is to lose weight and they catch you reaching for that extra slice of pizza, you’re going to get a stern look at the very least.

The people around you can be a huge aid in getting to where you want to be.

4. Find People with Similar Goals

Having other people with similar desires in life can be a huge motivator. For example, if you wanted to improve a particular skill, signing up for local skill shops or classes would allow you to meet like-minded people. Or, if you wanted to pursue a new career, you could connect with people on social media platforms like Reddit or Facebook. There are plenty of online groups where people come together to discuss ideas, share tips, and network.

Connecting with people who have similar ambitions to you makes your goals seem more realistic and achievable, however big or small. When we see that others were able to succeed in their goals, we know that those goals are possible.

So, if you have a dream you’ve been thinking about, but not working towards, or just some things you need to get done by the end of the day, why not try one of these steps and start making your dreams a reality, today!
